The Next Wave of Hearing Healthcare and Emerging Technologies 

We are witnessing a pivotal moment in hearing healthcare, with significant changes in both technology and delivery models that are redefining audiology care. One of the most significant changes is the introduction of Over-The-Counter (OTC) hearing aids. Since their introduction at the end of 2022, OTC hearing aids have been a hot topic among hearing healthcare professionals and the general population. While some professionals were concerned about the potential negative impact on audiology businesses, these concerns have not materialized. Instead, OTC hearing aids have raised awareness about hearing healthcare, encouraging more people to seek professional advice and care. 

In addition to OTC hearing aids, advanced technologies such as Bluetooth LE, Auracast audio, and sophisticated captioning and transcription tools are enhancing the lives of people with hearing loss. FEDERAL LAW PROHIBITS ANYONE BUT REGISTERED USERS WITH HEARING LOSS FROM USING INTERNET PROTOCOL (IP) CAPTIONED TELEPHONES WITH THE CAPTIONS TURNED ON. Automatic speech recognition software generates captions of what the other party to the call says, and, in certain circumstances, a live communications assistant may be included on the call to make needed corrections and/or add call details. The captions are then sent to the phone. There is a cost for each minute of captions generated, paid from a federally administered fund. To learn more, visit fcc.gov.
